The Layperson's Daily Regimen

A morning-to-evening rhythm of traditional Catholic prayers for the ordinary spiritual battles of ordinary days. The Sign of the Cross to begin, the Guardian Angel prayer and St. Michael for daytime confidence, Psalm 91 as the psalm of protection, the Anima Christi and Sub Tuum Praesidium to commit the evening to Christ and Our Lady, and the Sign of the Cross to close. Nothing here is new — every prayer is centuries old and available to any Catholic to memorize and pray.

Before you begin

Sacramentals are not Sacraments. The Sign of the Cross, blessed medals, holy water, scapulars — these are sacramentals. They dispose us to grace through the Church's intercession. They do not confer grace ex opere operato the way the seven Sacraments do (Catechism §1667-1670).

Private deprecatory prayer is not the solemn exorcism rite. The layperson may pray the prayers below for their own protection and the protection of their family. The layperson may not perform the solemn rite of exorcism — that is reserved to a priest with the bishop's mandate (De Exorcismis, 1999). Recordor teaches private deprecatory prayer only.

Confession, the Eucharist, and (in acute crisis) professional care come first. No regimen replaces the Sacraments. If you are in acute distress, this regimen is not enough — see the footer below.

Morning — begin the day

Prayed as soon as your feet hit the floor. Short — the point is to place the day, from the first breath, under God's protection.

During the day — confidence in battle

The prayers to reach for when temptation, fear, or discouragement come. Both stand on centuries of Catholic tradition and are prayed by the whole Church.

  • St. Michael the Archangel prayerLeo XIII, 1886. Short, direct, prayed at the end of every Low Mass 1886-1965 and by many Catholics today.
  • Psalm 91the psalm of protection. Prayed at Compline in the Roman Breviary. “He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob.”

Evening — commit the day

Before sleep. Two prayers of surrender — one to Christ, one to Our Lady — and the Sign of the Cross to close.

  • Anima Christi14th c. surrender to Christ. “Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me...”
  • Sub Tuum Praesidiumthe oldest known Marian prayer (3rd c.). “We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God.”
  • Sign of the Crossbless yourself, bless the room, sleep in peace.

Begin the regimen

Enrolling adds each prayer to your Pray practice and drops in three light reminder templates (Sunday Mass, monthly confession, daily Rosary). You can adjust or drop any of them any time.

All prayers listed are in the public domain (Roman Ritual, Vulgate psalms, Douay-Rheims Scripture, Leo XIII's Leonine prayer of 1886, Anima Christi 14th c., traditional Guardian Angel prayer, Sub Tuum Praesidium 3rd c.). Structure and framing are Recordor-native. Draws on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Rituale Romanum / De Exorcismis (1999), and long-standing Catholic devotional tradition. Priest review recommended before promoting this module to broader marketing surfaces.
